Teaching staff


Professor Kang Changjie


Current Advisor to the President of the National University of Singapore (Guangzhou Institute of Innovation at the National University of Singapore) and Honorary Executive Vice President of the National University of Singapore. Professor Kang is currently a foreign member of the Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK and a member of the Singapore Academy of Engineering.

Professor Kang graduated from the University of Warwick in the UK in 1973 with a PhD in Control Engineering. After graduating with a PhD, Professor Kang worked for three years at Eastern Shell Oil Company and International Shell Company, and then began his academic career at the National University of Singapore. Since 1977, Professor Kang has held several important administrative positions at the National University of Singapore, in addition to his research and teaching work, including the Director of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the School of Engineering and the Executive Vice President of the University responsible for research work (1994-2000). From 2001 to 2003, Professor Kang was seconded by the Singapore government to serve as Executive Vice Chairman of the Singapore Science, Technology and Research Authority (A * STAR). Professor Kang has also held senior public administration positions such as Director of the Singapore Economic Development Board and Founding Chairman of the Singapore Intellectual Property Board. From 2007 to 2016, Professor Kang was appointed as the founding director of the Department of Engineering and Technical Management at the School of Engineering at the National University of Singapore, and has been serving as the Executive Director of the Institute of Engineering Leadership since 2011. Professor Kang has been serving as an international consultant at the Technology Innovation Research Center of the School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University in China since 2014. Professor Kang's current research interests are innovation policy and strategy, as well as engineering leadership.

 

Course content:

Module 1: Disruptive (Latent) Innovation Strategy - New Thinking Leading Technology based Enterprises to Breakthrough

In this rapidly changing era of new quality productivity, traditional innovation models no longer meet the rapid development needs of technology innovation oriented enterprises. Disruptive (latent) innovation, as an emerging strategic thinking, is leading multiple enterprises to constantly break through themselves and achieve leapfrog development. This module will delve into the core concepts and practices of disruptive (latent) innovation, analyze its essential differences from traditional innovation models, and explore how to break industry rules and reshape market patterns. Combined with rich case studies and practical exercises, it will help students deeply understand its strategic value and implementation path.

Module 2: Technology prediction methods in the era of artificial intelligence

In the rapidly changing era of artificial intelligence, technology prediction is particularly crucial in the development process of technology-based enterprises. This section will focus on how to use professional technical prediction methods to insight and predict future technological trends. We will explore a series of efficient prediction methods and models that help us grasp the evolution direction of AI technology, provide forward-looking decision support for enterprises, and master practical prediction tools and strategies to seize opportunities in future technological waves.

Module 3: Frontier Technology Patent Layout - Challenges and Response Strategies

This module provides a detailed discussion on the challenges and response strategies of cutting-edge technology patent layout, and analyzes the world development trends of non-technical factors in fields such as unmanned driving, healthcare, and human-machine interaction. In addition, the course will also introduce the development status of cutting-edge technology in ASEAN countries, explore the particularity of its patents - the black box problem, and the different attitudes and strategies of patent offices in ASEAN countries towards cutting-edge technology patents.

Module 4: How to break down the barriers between geopolitics and innovative technology


This section will focus on technology prediction and innovation strategies in the era of artificial intelligence, while incorporating a geopolitical perspective to deeply analyze the relationship between technology and human nature. We will gain insight into future technological trends together, explore how to scientifically predict and grasp upcoming technological innovations, and then formulate innovation strategies that lead industry change. More importantly, the lecture will examine from a geopolitical perspective how technology and human nature interact in different regions and cultural backgrounds, with the aim of promoting technological innovation while also paying attention to and respecting the needs and values of human nature, and achieving harmonious coexistence between technology and humanity. Through practical case analysis, we will gain a deeper understanding of the application of technology prediction and innovation strategies in practical combat, as well as their profound impact on the relationship between technology and human nature.
