On the afternoon of October 17, Guangzhou Mayor Sun Zhiyang met with a delegation led by National University of Singapore (NUS) President Tan Eng Chye.
Mayor Sun expressed gratitude for NUS’s support to Guangzhou's economic and social development. He stated that Guangzhou is a key hub for the international sci-tech innovation center, hosting numerous universities, major research institutes, and comprehensive scientific research platforms. The city is steadfastly pursuing open innovation, fully leveraging the enabling role of major platforms like the Guangzhou National Laboratory and bilateral cooperation platforms such as the China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City. It is vigorously promoting the translation of scientific and technological innovations, accelerating the development of a “12218” modern industrial system, and speeding up the formation of new quality productive forces. Guangzhou has a solid foundation for cooperation with Singapore, and the NUS Guangzhou Research Translation and Innovation Institute (NUS GRTII) has developed rapidly with remarkable results since its establishment. Mayor Sun expressed hope that both sides would take the 35th anniversary of China-Singapore diplomatic relations as an opportunity to jointly advance the high-level development of NUS GRTII, closely align with Guangzhou's key industries, cultivate more high-level talent, and strengthen industry-university-research collaboration. Through these efforts, he looked forward to attracting more international organizations and Singaporean enterprises to Guangzhou for innovation and development, achieving greater mutual benefits and win-win outcomes.
President Tan Eng Chye thanked Guangzhou for its strong support for the Institute’s development and provided a brief overview of NUS’s recent progress. He stated that Guangzhou boasts a favorable innovation ecosystem, abundant application scenarios, and immense industrial development potential. He expressed his willingness to work with Guangzhou to further leverage NUS GRTII’s role as a bridge, comprehensively deepen innovation collaboration between enterprises and universities in both places, and inject new momentum into the development of Guangzhou’s modern industrial system.
